Geology

Crystal Grottoes Caverns – Distance from Camp-Resort: 10.6 miles

Discovered in 1920 and opened to the public in 1922, Crystal Grottoes Caverns is a great stop for a geology lesson! The caves are a spectacular natural phenomenon and have more formations per square foot than any cave known to man. They are also the most naturally kept cave system in the world.

History

Antietam National Battlefield – Distance from Camp-Resort: 9.8 miles

Infamously known as the “Bloodiest Day in History” the Battle of Antietam caused 23,000 soldiers to be killed or wounded in just 12 hours on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam ended the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia’s first invasion into the North and led Abraham Lincoln to issue the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation. Today, visitors can take tours with a Ranger, watch a video of the history, browse the museum store, and even do a battleground scavenger hunt!

The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore – Distance from Camp-Resort: 74 miles

Discover the animal kingdom with a day trip to The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore! Meet endangered African penguins, learn about conservation efforts by the Zoo, take part in an intimate, 20-30 minute tour with a guided keeper experience, or just enjoy the Zoo on a self-guided tour. There’s tons to explore!

Washington County Museum of Fine Arts – Distance from Camp-Resort: 6.9 miles

Opening back up to the pubic starting July 28th, the Washington County Museum of Fine Arts is a wonderful location to learn all about art. From nineteenth century arts to modernism, guests can enjoy a variety of exhibitions, arts class for all ages, and self-guided tours.
